Extraversia comes out of a split I've carried for a while. I love painting from observation, light and shadow, the particular quality of a foggy morning, and at the same time I can't work only from what's in front of me. Since I started working with oil, abstraction has run alongside the observational work, not replacing it. Extraversia is what happens when I stop holding back.
I start from something I've seen, a breakfast, a table, someone sitting across from me, and I paint without a sketch, without deciding ahead of time what I'll keep and what I'll let go of. Usually most of it goes. What's left is just enough to still recognize where it came from.
The series has a few earlier pieces, but it really started at the turn of 2019 into 2020, when the shift into abstraction became a conscious one. I still go back to painting from life sometimes. The two haven't cancelled each other out.
